Charter of the External Advisory Board
(Table A)

Mission
    The mission of the External Advisory Board of the NSF Science and Technology Center for Responsible Solvents and Processes (STC-ERSP) is to provide guidance and feedback to the STC-ERSP in order to ensure the effectiveness of the Center in meeting its commitments to NSF in serving its key stakeholders. These stakeholders include (1) the scientific/technical community; (2) the academic/educational community, including students K-12, undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in technical and social sciences; (3) industry and venture community; (4) the general populace, especially in our home states; and (5) federal and state governmental agencies responsible for overseeing science and education.


Selection Criteria

    Members of the External Advisory Board generally either represent key stakeholders or, having managed successful technical centers, are intimately familiar with the requirements for success. They were selected on the basis of the following criteria:

knowledge, experience, and reputation in their respective fields,

bullet

broad diversity, including professional, gender, racial, geographic and sector; specifically, we seek advice on academic/technical, educational/outreach and industry issues

bullet

independence from the STC-ERSP and willingness to render straightforward opinions regarding effectiveness of our Center

bullet

commitment to improving the educational process and to providing access to higher education for all of our citizens.


Expectations of Board Members

    Members of the EAB are expected (1) to attend if possible a one-day NSF site review in the fall (normally mid-October) and a teleconference in the spring, (2) to invest time necessary to understand the goals of the STC-ERSP and its commitments and (3) to render straightforward opinions in the following areas:

Appropriate research directions and goals

bullet

Needs of stakeholder groups, theirs and others

bullet

Opinions of Center activities and suggestions for new activities

bullet

Funding/selection of K-12, outreach and social science programs

bullet

Evaluation of various communication methods and suggestions for improvement

bullet

Assistance in selection and means to fund research projects
-     External reviews of seed projects
-     External evaluation of project progress reports

Assistance in setting priorities
