Research Plan

Overall objectives
Preliminary studies have shown that CO2 is an excellent medium for conducting surface-mediated reactions. Interestingly, some reactions proceed best in liquid CO2 and others under supercritical conditions. One of our goals will be to delineate the causes for this and to establish preferred experimental conditions for each type of reaction. The preliminary studies have also shown that surface-mediated oxidation of amines can be conducted in the presence of CO2, despite the fact that amines normally react rapidly with CO2. We plan to exploit this as a general method for conducting reactions of amines in CO2. Finally, we have found that many surface-mediated reactions can be conducted in the absence of a solvent, which is the ultimate in environmental responsibility. We plan to delineate more fully the circumstances under which surface-mediated reactions can be conducted without solvent.

Relation to overall objectives of the Center
Our studies will complement other projects as they will involve small molecules, whereas many of the other projects will be centered on large-molecule chemistry. Our studies will also complement those of Professor Yusuf G. Adewuyi on the chemical reactivity of zeolites in the presence of CO2.

Approach and timelines
During the first year each of the above goals will be addressed. Based on the results of these studies, extended goals for future years will be developed.

Thrust area of this proposal
Thrust Area D: Chemistry and catalysis.

Connectivity

Collaborators, multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary components
We will be working in conjunction with Professor Yusuf G. Adewuyi, Department of Chemical Engineering, North Carolina A & T State University.

Related work in other thrust areas

Sharing of resources (students, supplies, equipment, etc.)
Our Hastalloy reactor will be available to other groups when not in use by us.

Requested Budget Allocation - Year 1
