12 April 2008: Program Manager  Description: Army Research Office
ARO will soon post an announcement seeking candidates for Program Manager in Physical/Theoretical Chemistry.  That announcement will appear at  www.cpol.army.mil or www.usajobs.opm.gov    sometime at end April/beginning May.  The candidate will be asked to fill in an on-line resume and that is crucial:  the system will make its first cut of eligible candidates from that resume and, if the information there does not relate specifically to the elements of the job announcement, it is unlikely to survive.

ARO will likely seek both junior (students very near their PhD, post-docs, very junior faculty) and senior candidates.  ARO will look for people trained at the PhD level in Physical/Theoretical Chemistry.  Published research in the generally accepted literature will help.  One of our colleagues at NC State, Prof. Peter Fedkiw, might be able to advise you.  Questions regarding the open position(s) contact.

The Design for the Environment Program partners with industry and other stakeholders to make the Agency's tools and expertise available so that human health and the environment can be factored into decision-making.  Our programs promote "best practices" in chemical use, conduct life cycle assessment and evaluate the environmental and human health profiles of alternatives under consideration by industry. In the DfE Formulator Program, we collaborate with manufacturers of blended chemical products (like laundry detergents, industrial cleaners and floor coatings) to improve their human health and environmental profile. The work involves developing profiles on the characteristics of individual product ingredients (p-chem properties, biodegradation, health and environmental toxicities, etc.)-based on existing data and estimation models-and recommending safer substitutes for chemicals of concern. When a product has ingredients with a more positive health and environmental profile than others in its class, DfE offers the manufacturer recognition through partnership. A chemistry or chemical engineering background would be helpful, but not essential. Graduate and undergraduate-level applicants will be welcome. Full-time internships are preferred, but part-time would be considered. Internships could last as long as a year. Please submit a resume to Clive Davies, Design for the Environment Branch, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, at davies.clive@epa.gov .

I would like to give you a bit of advice about preparing for a  job interview. It might be something most you  know but some of you might find it useful.

Read “Knock’em Dead" by Martin Yates.(I have copies)

Prepare for any interviews by finding out as much as you can about the company you plan to visit.
A good way to start is to go to a search engine like Google and enter  the name of the company surrounded  by quotation marks. You will find at the least the company home page and  usually many other interesting places to search.

When you have researched the company, develop a list of question that you can use to hold up your end of the conversation during your interview.
