Research Plan

Overall objectives
Uzochukwu proposes to (1) initiate summer internships for undergraduate students at all S&T institutions and (2) develop plans for an international conference on Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes

Approach and timelines
Year 1-5: The internship program will be based on supervised scientific and engineering research in Environmentally Responsible Carbon Dioxide Processes. Interns will work with a faculty researcher/engineer (mentor) during the summer months. The intern and his/her faculty mentor who will develop an independent project to be carried out by the intern. This research will continue during the semesters, leading to scientific reports and presentations. Faculty mentors will work with each intern to supervise and assist with research, and advise interns on the developments of their careers and graduate training options. It is anticipated that the interns will seek graduate training in Environmentally Responsible Carbon Dioxide Processes. Interns will be selected by faculty mentors (S&T Internship Committee). Nineteen (19) interns are proposed per year (95 interns/5 years). There are plans to collaborate with existing University internship programs at UNC-CH, NCSU, A&T and UT Austin. The internship will be expanded to Industries with interest in carbon dioxide processes. The internship program will inspire future scientists and engineers and improve learning. The internship program will help to educate a new generation of scientists and engineers in environmental problem solving and will also increase participation of minority students in science and engineering research.

Thrust area of this proposal
Educational Outreach

Connectivity

Collaborators, multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary components
Workshops with industrial, government leaders will be organized twice every five years. Plans for an International Conference on Environmentally Responsible Solvents and Processes which will be held in 2002 (tentative) will be begin with the development of databases of potential attendees, conference theme, flyers, etc. The conference will enhance knowledge transfer to the international community, which will lead to long-term reductions in solvent emissions, soil contamination, waste water generation and energy consumption. More than 500 people are expected to attend the conference. A conference planning committee will be appointed and will include S&T Center investigators, students, State agencies, Industry Personnel and NSF personnel.

Related work in other thrust areas
Additionally, Uzochukwu will serve as site coordinator (A&T) and will coordinate the research activities and logistics for A&T investigators - Kabadi and Roberts (Thermodynamics), Ilias (Membrane Separations) and Adewuyi (Chemistry and Catalysis).

Sharing of resources (students, supplies, equipment, etc.)
Undergraduate students supported under this program will support all of the technical programs at NCA&T.
