Research Plan

Overall objectives

The purpose of this project is to provide a K-12 outreach component to the Center that will develop pedagogically sound content modules based on topics stemming from the research program on environmentally responsible solvents.
     1) We will set up an educational web site for the
     Center
     2) We will produce learning modules linked to the NC
Standard Course of Study, working with K-12 teachers
and students, distribute and evaluate the modules.
     3) We will work with outreach activities at each of the
four Center campuses to disseminate learning materials
and involve Center faculty and students in K-12 outreach.

Relation to overall objectives of the Center
The K-12 Outreach activities are central to the objectives of the Center - to disseminate the research of the Center, to increase public awareness of the Center's activities, to inspire the next generation toward careers in science and engineering, and to contribute to the improvement of K-12 education.

Approach and timelines
Year 1: Conduct inventory of outreach programs at Center campuses. Involve Center members in K-12 outreach. Implement outreach web site. Prepare concordance between Center's science and NC Standard Course of Study. Choose theme of curriculum project. Convene teachers and Center scientists for construction and testing of curriculum materials. Design educational evaluation protocols.
Year 2-4: Publish, disseminate materials to programs at Center campuses. Teacher training programs based on the materials. Evaluation of products. Planning and development for new curriculum projects. Maintenance of web site. Involvement of Center personnel in local outreach projects. Publications and presentations at education meetings.
Year 5: Continue dissemination of materials via print, web and campus student programs. Complete educational evaluations. Publications in teaching literature.

Thrust area of this proposal
Educational Outreach

Connectivity

Collaborators, multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary components
We will collaborate with designated outreach leaders and Center scientists on each Center campus. In addition, The Science House collaborates with schools and education organizations across North Carolina. We will seek through these collaborations appropriate distribution paths for Center materials.

Related work
Not applicable (none other funded by NSF STC-ERSP)

Sharing of resources (students, supplies, equipment, etc.)
The curriculum development project will share resources of The Science House at NC State University.

Plans for Additional Funding.

Funding agencies/programs and planned dates of submission:
None planned at this time. The project is already subsidized by Science House funds and by personnel supported from a grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. After the first year of work, when the Center has an outreach "track record," we will examine possibilities for outside funding of enhancements to the project.
